New dairy management decision-making tools available online

A suite of free, easy-to-use dairy management decision-making tools developed by UW-Extension specialists is now available online at

The tools cover many important aspects of farm management, including feeding, heifers, reproduction, production, replacement, finances, environment and price risk.

They are designed to help producers make important decisions such as whether or not to expand an operation. The “Decision Support System Program for Dairy Production and Expansion” tool, for example, forecasts changes in herd structures, predicts heifer growth, tracks cow movement and cash flow, and more, to help producers decide if expansion is a viable option.

The tools were created by Victor Cabrera, a dairy science professor and extension specialist, with the help of students and colleagues. All are based on scientific research.
