Memo from the provost: CALS leadership transition & impending dean review

TO: Faculty & Staff in CALS
FROM: Paul M. DeLuca, Jr., Provost
RE: CALS Leadership Transition & Impending Dean Review

I write to provide you with an update on the leadership transition plans for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, as well as to inform you about an impending dean review.

Molly Jahn has indicated she intends to return from her temporary post as acting under secretary of research, education and economics at USDA to her position as dean on June 1, 2010. Irwin Goldman, who is serving as interim dean and has served as vice dean of the college since October, 2006, has expressed his desire to return to his faculty position in the Department of
Horticulture on June 1, and his request will be honored. Ray Guries will continue to serve as interim vice dean of the college until November 2010.

It is our general practice to conduct dean reviews prior to or during the 5th year of leadership. Chancellor Martin and I have decided to take this transitional time to conduct the review of Dean Molly Jahn, who began as dean on August 1, 2006. We are delighted to report that Emeritus Dean Charles Read has agreed to chair the dean review committee and, in short order, a full committee will be appointed. You will receive more specific information about the review process and the review committee after the committee is established.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Irwin, who has provided outstanding leadership to the college during this academic year, for his service to the college and the university.
