Licensing deals provide greater access to professional journals
Steenbock Library is happy to announce that campus libraries have recently negotiated new mutli-year licensing agreements with some journal publishers. As a result of these negotiations, you now have greatly increased access to journals from Elsevier, including some titles that had been canceled in the past. Among the hundreds of titles available from this publisher are such titles as Applied Soil Ecology, Bioresource Technology, Food Policy, Journal of Insect Physiology, Science of the Total Environment, Scientia Horticulturae, and the journal Stem Cell Research, which began publication in 2007.
Campus libraries have also negotiated access to all of the Nature journal titles, including Nature Protocols, Nature Photonics, and Nature Geoscience. Despite these favorable leasing agreements, Steenbock has had to cancel some journal subscriptions this year in order to stay within its budget. You can learn more about this year’s journal subscriptions, including a list of titles proposed for cancellation, at http://steenbock.library.wisc.edu/news/journal_assessment08.html.
This website also includes a brief update on journal price increases and local budget issues, information about the UW System budget request for UW Digital Commons, and an explanation of the criteria used to identify journals for cancellation. To comment on any of these cancellations, please contact Steenbock Library Director Jean Gilbertson by November 1.
Whenever you need a journal article not available on the UW campus, please continue to use Library Express to request a copy at no charge to you. The library is keenly aware of the inconvenience caused by cancelling subscriptions, and is committed to providing you with all of the information you need in a timely manner.
