Raffa’s cover story in BioScience spurs call for more USDA research funds

A BioScience cover story on the dynamics of the bark beetle highlights the synthesis on the dynamics of bark beetle outbreaks reported by entomologist Ken Raffa and colleagues. The article is also referenced in an editorial in the same issue, titled An Epidemic with Global Consequences. The editors call for more funding for USDA, noting that infestations of tiny beetles can colossal impacts. They note that a mountain pine beetle infestation that has devastated thousands of acres in British Columbia has converted that forest from a small carbon sink to a large carbon source.
