RSVP for CALS Equity & Diversity Lunch and Learn: Reducing racism, promoting inclusion – Feb. 10
UPDATE: Due to popular demand, the location for this event has changed. Markus Brauer’s presentation “Scientifically Tested Methods to Reduce Racism and Promote Inclusion,” will now be held in Room 1520 of the Microbial Sciences Building.
Markus Brauer, professor in the Department of Psychology and the Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present “Scientifically Tested Methods to Reduce Racism and Promote Inclusion” on February 10, from noon until 1:00 p.m. in Room 1520 of the Microbial Sciences Building.
Most pro-diversity initiatives are not evaluated. Among the few initiatives that have undergone rigorous evaluation, most turn out to be ineffective or counterproductive. The empirical evidence for the effectiveness of diversity training is mixed at best. The same is true for approaches that aim to raise awareness of implicit bias.
“In my talk I will argue that successful pro-diversity initiatives require a systematic approach in which the target audience, the target behaviors, and the “barriers” to behavior change are identified through background research (e.g., focus groups, climate survey),” says Brauer. “I will then present three pro-diversity initiatives that have been shown to be effective in randomized controlled trials: the prejudice habit-breaking workshop, a norm-based campaign, and motivational interventions. I will conclude by giving concrete advice on how to evaluate your next pro-diversity initiative.”
RSVP at https://go.wisc.edu/zz6hk2 by Monday, February 3 so there can be an accurate count for lunch, which will be sponsored by the Department of Horticulture. All are welcome.
Born and raised in Germany, Brauer received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1994).
