Info on safe computing when traveling abroad

The Office of the CIO and Vice Provost for Information Technology (Bruce Maas) provides information regarding safe computing when traveling abroad.

As far as the CIO office and DoIT knows, DoIT is the only place on campus for loaner laptops (only for China Initiative) or rental laptops (open to all) for overseas travel. The laptops are wide open (no encryption or security) so that the user can install any software needed for research overseas. DoIT wipes the laptop of files and reinstalls applications when it comes back.

Loaner laptops. The loaner system is available only to delegates who are traveling with the China-Plus Initiative Delegation Program:

Rental laptops. UW-Madison faculty, staff and students can rent laptops from the DoIT Help Desk on a daily, weekly, monthly or semester basis:

Rental IPhones. DoIT also offers iPhones for rental. Contact DoIT for pricing and more information at:, or 608-263-7237. Rentals are available at the Dayton Street Walk-in Helpdesk.

Booking lead times. DoIT usually has a number of laptops available so a person can usually rent one without delay, but booking in advance is recommended.

DoIT suggests reserving an iPhone two weeks to a month in advance to be sure that one is available.
