First looks at President Obama’s proposed FY 2011 spending for AFRI and DOE

Today (Feb. 1) President Obama presented to Congress his proposed FY 2011 budget. Here a couple of documents related to funding sources that are important to the college.

This document shows the proposed spending for the Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), a source of a fair amount of the CALS research funding. Note that while the total dollar figure proposed for NIFA is about the same as last year, there is a substantial increase — $166 billion — proposed for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program. This is significant in that CALS is well positioned to compete for these funds.

This document summarizes the proposed spending for the Department of Energy, which is the source of funding for the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center and other energy-related research on campus.

Keep in mind that it is early in the game. These represent first looks at a complex document that serves as the basis for a budget  deliberation process will go on for months.
